Process

  1. Unscrew back screws
  2. Firmly grab the edge of the back shell and pull, detaching the clips and removing the back shell. Be careful to not break the attached battery wire.
    1. You can also use a pick for this, but I have not found it to be necessary for this console.

  1. Optionally, unplug the battery. You do not need to do this as long as you're careful to not stress this wire.

  1. Remove the stock buttons by sliding them off the post.

  1. Slide L1 and R1 all the way down the posts and click them. They should click and return. If they do not return easily, the hole and post are fitting tightly. In this case, slide them up and down the post to let the star shaped hole adapt to the post. After sliding and pressing a few times, it should return freely.
  2. Slide L2 and R2 to meet L1 and R1. Test that they push freely and return and slide them up and down the post if they're not returning instantly. Again, this should only require a little breaking in for them to return normally.

  1. If you unplugged the battery, plug it back in.
  2. Reattach the back shell, starting with the bottom edge. Before clipping in each side of the top edge, depress all of the buttons on that side. This helps locators on the buttons fall into place.
  3. Before screwing things together, test the buttons to make sure that everything feels right.
  4. Screw everything back together. I would recommend gentle torque when installing the screw, since it's possible to harm the plastics.
  5. Test the buttons again, with everything in final shape. If it all feels good, you're done!

Troubleshooting

As of early October 2024, I am including a small shim set with these buttons. It seems that Anbernic is a little imprecise with the placement of the switches on the PCB, so there can be small differences in the plunger position, which can lead to misaligned buttons and bad presses.

If your buttons are misaligned or don’t seem to press the switch all the way, try applying the small rectangular shims to where the blue plunger falls. You can stack multiple shims if you need to, but start with one. This is most common on R2 and L2, since the lever arm makes them more sensitive to displacements.
